Linda and I, we are admins of several such groups – aside from our regional babywearing group in Ostrava, we are administrators also of the all-Czech and Slovak group Nosící Česko-Slovensko (Babywering Czechia and Slovakia), which is primarily a counsel and support group. And who needs the counsel and support the most? Babywearing beginners who want to choose the right carrier for their baby or need to consult its adjusting, of course. Every single one of us, being a more or less experienced babywearer, was in this position some time in the past. So, before any of you super-experienced carrier experts sit behind your computer and start to write a sophisticated answer, meaning well, of course, try to remember, who is (probably) on the other side of your screen. It is usually a stressed first-time-mum of a baby that cries a lot and needs to be carried, sometimes even a baby younger than one month – just remember, those postpartum hormones! And she bought something quite expensive and thought she chose something that would be the best for her beloved baby (and it does matter if her choice was based on advertising in mummy magazines, recommendation of a sales assistant in a baby goods shop or promo of different social network influencers). And the first thing she receives as an answer when asking about that carrier in such above mentioned FB groups? That she should buy a completely different, “more suitable” of “better” carrier. What are the feelings of this unsure, inexperienced mum who struggles not only with adjusting of a carrier, but with much more different “baby issues” she was totally unprepared for, after reading such answers? That she failed completely (again) when it comes to taking care of her infant – that she is not even able to choose a “suitable” carrier. This is not something you want such a mum to feel – in better case scenario, she will leave the “unfriendly” FB group, in worse case scenario she will give up babywearing completely, thinking that the babywearing community is a group of obnoxious ergo-nazis who do not allow any compromise, are stuck with their concept of the “right” ergonomic letters that should be of a certain shape and if they are not, babywearing will probably if not kill, at least harm the child both physically and psychically.
